At just three years old, I was introduced to music by Ms. Harmony, my neighbor. In our apartment complex, she and I would play the piano together. This was the beginning of my love for music.
Inspired by my early musical experiences with Ms. Harmony, I began playing the violin in kindergarten. Music quickly became a core part of who I was.
I continued to develop my skills through school, performing at Roberts Elementary and gaining confidence as a young violinist.
When Ms. Harmony moved to a nursing home, I visited her regularly. I brought my violin and performed for her, just like she once did for me.
As time went on, our visits turned into magical duets, where she would sing while I played the violin. These moments brought joy to both of us through music.
Ms. Harmony organized a special concert at the nursing home. She sang, and I played the violin. It was a powerful, unforgettable experience.
Ms.Harmony unfortunately passed away after living a long full life, yet her legacy still lived on through the music she inspired in me. I continued playing music as I got older, holding her memory close.
I’ve continued to play, competing in UIL since I was 8, performing at school, and always remembering the spark she gave me. I played all throughout middle school and haven’t stopped since.
In her honor, once I started freshman year of high school, I created Happiness with Harmony, a nonprofit that brings student musicians to nursing homes and hospitals. Our mission is to heal generations, build connections through music, and share the same joy Ms. Harmony once gave to me for music. Young musicians now can find purpose in giving back, just as she inspired me to do.
Jaya Ramineni is a freshman at Lamar High School with a love for music and a passion for bringing joy to others. She has been playing the violin since she was five years old and participated in many UIL competitions. Beyond the violin, Jaya plays tennis and competes in many debate tournaments. Jaya is also a proud big sister to two little brothers and loves spending time with family. Through everything she does, she hopes to spread positivity, connection, and most of all, harmony.
Ms. Harmony was a kind soul who lived a long and musical life, almost reaching 100 years old! When she lived in the same apartment building as Jaya, they would visit each other and share moments through music together. Later in life, Ms. Harmony moved to a nursing home, but her love for music never faded. She continued to sing and stay active in her community, bringing joy to the people around her with her. She was also a loving mother. She will always continue to inspire the mission of Happiness with Harmony.
